Overview: The Painted Valley Course at Promontory Club is a private Jack Nicklaus Signature design in Park City, Utah. At 8,098 yards from the back markers, it is among the longest courses in the country, yet length is only one part of the experience. The layout follows a stream through Promontory’s high-altitude valleys, using broad open fairways, undulating greens and large-scale mountain terrain to create a course that can look generous from the tee and exacting near the green. The setting has a links-inspired openness, but the elevation, changing lies and Wasatch views make the course unmistakably Utah.
History: Promontory’s first championship course, the Pete Dye Canyon Course, was in club play by 2002. The second course, Jack Nicklaus’s Painted Valley design, followed in 2007 as the community’s high-altitude companion layout. Nicklaus routed it alongside a stream and through the natural valleys rather than treating the site as a blank canvas. That approach gave the course its broad rhythm and strong separation between holes, while the surrounding ranch landscape became part of the visual strategy. The course quickly entered national discussion as a new private design and has remained the more expansive of Promontory’s two 18-hole courses.
Did You Know? Golf Digest named Painted Valley the third-best new private course in the United States in 2007, the year it opened for club play. The course’s 8,098-yard championship number is unusually large even before the high elevation is considered, so the same layout can present a very different strategic problem from shorter markers.
