Overview: Princeville Makai is a North Shore Kauaʻi course with cliff-top views, lava ridges, ocean wind and the Hanalei landscape beyond the fairways. Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed the 7,223-yard par-72 routing, which combines open coastal holes with more sheltered inland corridors. The course’s elevation and rainfall create a playing environment unlike the drier south-shore layouts.
History: Makai originally opened in 1971 as Robert Trent Jones Jr.’s first solo effort. Jones Jr. renovated the property in 2009 and 2010, and all 18 holes reopened in October 2024 after a further refinement project covering bunkers, drainage and cart paths.
Did You Know? Princeville Makai averages roughly 78 inches of rain a year according to the operator’s reopening account. That rainfall is a design and maintenance fact, because drainage and turf selection are essential to keeping the North Shore routing playable.
