Overview: Pretoria Golf Club is one of the capital’s historic urban parkland courses, with an 18-hole par-72 routing in the Phillip Nel Park area. Mature trees and the established city setting give the course a traditional feel, while the moderate length and changing tree lines make placement more important than simply hitting the longest club. It is a practical central Pretoria course with the atmosphere of an old club rather than a newly built estate.
History: The club was founded on 2 May 1894, and the first nine-hole course was established within the following month. Its official opening took place on 9 June 1894, placing Pretoria Golf Club among the early organised golf institutions in South Africa. The club has since grown into a full 18-hole facility while retaining the historical continuity of its original city location.
Did You Know? Pretoria Golf Club’s early course came together remarkably quickly. The first nine holes were laid out within weeks of the club’s formation, a sign of how strongly the new game had taken hold in the capital at the end of the nineteenth century.
