Overview: Powerscourt Golf Club ~ West is the second 18-hole layout at the Powerscourt Estate in County Wicklow. David McLay Kidd designed the course as a parkland layout with links characteristics, using the estate’s open ground, mature vegetation and mountain views to create a different experience from Peter McEvoy’s East course. The Powerscourt Hotel’s current golf information gives the West a championship length of 6,345 metres, approximately 6,934 yards. The course remains a distinct routing within the 36-hole complex.
History: The West course opened in 2003 and was designed by Scottish architect David McLay Kidd. It was added after the East course’s 1996 opening, turning Powerscourt into a two-course golf destination. The estate’s older history provides the setting, but the West course belongs to the modern resort era. Its development also created a useful contrast between two designers working on the same broad property and responding to the same Sugarloaf backdrop in different ways.
Did You Know? Powerscourt’s two courses share an estate but not a design language. The East follows Peter McEvoy’s established contours, while the West is a David McLay Kidd course with its own routing and visual rhythm. Treating West as a separate profile is important for players choosing between two full rounds that happen to have the same estate address.
