Overview: Potomac Shores Golf Club in Dumfries is a Jack Nicklaus Signature design built across a hilly peninsula above the Potomac River. The 18-hole par-72 course reaches 7,156 yards and uses mature hardwoods, native wetland buffers, river views and more than 200 feet of elevation change to create a varied round. Some holes move along the bluff and open toward the water, while others turn through tighter wooded corridors. The design is strategic rather than merely long: the safest tee line can leave a more demanding approach, and the best landing area is often determined by the slope of the ground beyond it.
History: SunCal held the grand opening on May 5, 2014, making Potomac Shores the first public Jack Nicklaus Signature course in the Washington, D.C. metro area. The course was planned as the golf centerpiece of a 1,920-acre master-planned community with two miles of Potomac shoreline. Nicklaus Design describes the land's wildlife, wetland edges and river setting as the inspiration for the routing. From its opening, the course was intended to combine a championship presentation with a public, daily-play identity rather than operate as a private residential club alone.
Did You Know? Potomac Shores was designed around more than 200 feet of elevation change on a peninsula with two miles of shoreline. That combination gives the course a distinctly vertical character for a river course: the round repeatedly shifts between bluff-top views, wooded slopes and wetland edges instead of staying on one flat plane.
