Overview: Portsalon Golf Club sits beneath the Knockalla Mountains on the shore of Ballymastocker Bay in County Donegal. The 18-hole links combines coastal views, sand hills, firm running ground, and a par-72 routing of roughly 7,100 yards. Charles Thompson created the early course, while the present layout also reflects a substantial 2000 upgrade by Pat Ruddy that lengthened the links and added nine new holes. The result is a course with a nineteenth-century foundation and a more modern championship scale, played through a landscape where wind and dune contours shape club selection.
History: Colonel B.J. Barton founded Portsalon Golf Club in 1891 and established the hotel and links as part of the same coastal development. Charles Thompson, the professional at Portrush, designed the course, which quickly attracted championship golf. Portsalon hosted the Irish Ladies Championship in 1905 and 1912 and became one of the nine founding clubs of the Golfing Union of Ireland. The club purchased the land in 1986, and Pat Ruddy's 2000 redesign created the expanded course now played.
Did You Know? Portsalon was one of the founding clubs of the Golfing Union of Ireland. Its early competition history is equally notable: the links hosted the Irish Ladies Championship twice before the modern expansion, giving the bay a place in the formative story of Irish tournament golf.
