Overview: Port Shepstone Country Club The scorecard is par 72 across 18 holes parkland course on KwaZulu-Natal’s South Coast, with the uMzimkhulu River and the surrounding subtropical hills shaping the setting. At about 5,830 metres from the longer tees, the course is not dependent on extreme length. It rewards a clean line through the trees, sensible decisions around water and the ability to keep a score together when the coastal landscape begins to narrow the view.
History: The club’s story reaches back to 1912, when golf began in the Port Shepstone area on a nine-hole course. A further nine holes were added in 1928 and the present club identity was established in 1948. Syd Brews later designed the current parkland course, which now serves both as a community club and as a useful golfing stop for visitors travelling the South Coast.
Did You Know? Flooding by the uMzimkhulu has been part of the club’s history, and the river remains central to the visual identity of the course. The relationship is a reminder that the lush South Coast scenery is also a living landscape, capable of changing the character of the course after major weather.
