Overview: Tacking Point is home to Port Macquarie’s coastal 18-hole course along Port Macquarie’s coastal fringe. The current layout plays to par 71 and measures just under 5,900 metres from the back markers, with tree-lined holes, coastal light and the broader landscape of Port Macquarie shaping the round. It is a substantial public course but not a brute: the interest comes from choosing lines through the fairways and managing approach shots as the course moves between more open and more enclosed sections.
History: The club was founded in 1910 and moved to its present Tacking Point location in the post-war period. Six holes were in play in 1953, nine were playable by November 1953, and the further nine were finished in April 1967. The 18-hole course officially opened on 24 February 1968, with Scottish professional James Scott credited with designing the new layout. That long construction story is part of the club’s character.
Did You Know? Port Macquarie’s earlier courses included holes around town and near the beaches before the club settled at Tacking Point. The current course’s history therefore links an old coastal golf tradition to a more permanent championship layout, rather than suggesting that the present fairways date all the way back to the club’s 1910 foundation.
