Overview: Polokwane Golf Club The 18-hole layout carries a par of 72 parkland course in Limpopo’s capital, where Peter Matkovich’s modern layout moves through bushveld vegetation and the warm, open landscape of the northern Highveld. The white-tee course measures about 6,744 metres, with longer yellow tees available. Bent-grass greens and tree-lined corridors make the course a serious test while keeping the atmosphere distinctly local and relaxed.
History: Golf in Polokwane has deep roots, with the municipality tracing the club’s story to the nineteenth-century growth of the town. The modern course was developed in the early 1990s under Peter Matkovich, bringing a full championship routing into the city’s expanding sporting landscape. The club’s later history is closely associated with the development of South African professionals, including Retief Goosen, who learned the game in the region.
Did You Know? Retief Goosen is one of Polokwane’s most famous golfing connections. The two-time U.S. Open champion learned his golf in the area, giving the club a direct link to one of South Africa’s most accomplished modern players.
