Overview: Point Judith Country Club occupies a coastal setting in Narragansett, looking toward Block Island Sound and the entrance to Narragansett Bay. The course belongs to the older Rhode Island tradition of compact seaside layouts: fairways are shaped by the available ground, the wind can change the preferred line, and the greens demand a precise approach. Its character is traditional rather than theatrical, with the coast providing the broadest visual frame and the course’s older routing supplying the interest between the views.
History: Point Judith’s golf history reaches back to 1895. Rhode Island Golf Association records identify the course among Donald Ross’s Rhode Island work and note that he remodeled it and added a new nine in 1927. That later intervention helps explain the course’s place in the state’s architectural story: it began in the first generation of American golf, then received a more fully developed Ross treatment as the club and the game matured. The result is an old coastal course whose present identity comes from both its early origins and its twentieth-century refinement.
Did You Know? The club’s name is shared with the nearby Point Judith Lighthouse, a landmark at the western entrance to Narragansett Bay. The lighthouse story is older than the golf course: an original wooden tower was built in 1810, replaced after a storm, and the existing octagonal tower dates from 1857. That maritime landmark provides a useful historical reference for understanding the exposed coastal landscape around the club.
