Overview: At Locust Valley, Piping Rock Club is associated with Charles Blair Macdonald's template-hole tradition. Biarritz, Road and Redan ideas are used within a more enclosed club setting, where the geometry of the green complexes matters as much as the line from the tee.
History: The course was developed in the early twentieth century and is generally dated to 1911 in course histories. Its relationship with the other Macdonald courses on Long Island makes it part of one of the most concentrated chapters in American golf architecture.
Did You Know? A Biarritz green is built around a pronounced crosswise swale. At Piping Rock, that feature is a practical lesson in why a seemingly large green can still demand a very precise approach.
