Overview: Pinehurst No. 9 is the resort's Jack Nicklaus course, set among longleaf pines and the rolling Sandhills. The routing is more spacious and contemporary in feel than Pinehurst's Ross heritage courses, with broad corridors and strategic positioning. It is a resort course, but its access and identity should not be confused with the private National Golf Club that preceded it.
History: Nicklaus's course opened in 1989 as the National Golf Club. Pinehurst acquired the property in 2014 and made it the resort's No. 9 course. Pinehurst's own account preserves both stages of the story, which is why the old National name remains relevant when researching older reviews.
Did You Know? No. 9 is the only Pinehurst resort course designed by Jack Nicklaus, according to Pinehurst's course history. The course was not built as No. 9 in 1989; it became part of the resort after the 2014 acquisition.
