Overview: Located in Pinehurst, Course No. 4 at Pinehurst Resort is a classic Sandhills routing designed by Donald Ross and redesigned by Gil Hanse. The layout plays through undulating topography and features native sand areas, wiregrass, and exposed sandy waste areas. Broad fairways lead to contoured green complexes that require strategic positioning and creative short-game play to navigate.
History: Originally opened in 1919 as a design by Donald Ross, the course underwent multiple modifications over the decades. In 2018, architect Gil Hanse completely redesigned the course, restoring the natural, rustic character of the Sandhills landscape and aligning its aesthetic with the famous No. 2 course. Hanse removed modern water hazards and reinstated the original sandy waste areas and wiregrass.
Did You Know? The course served as a co-host for the 2019 U.S. Amateur Championship alongside No. 2, showcasing the successful restoration of its rugged, sand-native design on a national stage.
