Overview: Pestana Vale da Pinta is an 18-hole, par-71 parkland course in the rolling country around Carvoeiro. Ronald Fream’s routing uses the dry landscape as a design asset, threading fairways through carob, fig, almond, and olive trees and placing greens on subtly changing ground. Its interest comes from angled lies, thoughtful bunker positions, and approaches where an open target becomes difficult if the drive finishes on the wrong side. The course asks for planning without becoming severe or theatrical.
History: Vale da Pinta opened in 1992 and later became associated with the European Seniors Tour Qualifying Final, held there for eight consecutive years according to Pestana’s material. The original Fream design remains the basis of the current routing, while the competition history shows how its moderate par and varied approaches can produce a serious test. Its development is closely linked to the neighboring Gramacho resort complex.
Did You Know? A roughly 1,200-year-old olive tree is one of the course’s distinctive living landmarks. It is not a decorative specimen placed beside the fairways, but part of the older agricultural landscape around which Fream’s routing works. The tree captures the central idea of Vale da Pinta: modern golf lines set within a landscape whose important features were already there long before the course.
