Overview: Penang Golf Club is the island's sole championship 18-hole course, set in Bukit Jambul near Bayan Lepas. The current club profile gives 5,848 metres at par 72, approximately 6,395 yards, with Bermuda fairways and tee boxes and Tif Dwarf greens. Rolling fairways rise and fall through tropical planting, with sand bunkers and water hazards requiring careful club selection. The setting also brings broad views across Penang, including the island's bridges, while the club's driving range, putting green and teaching facilities make it a practical base for visiting golfers as well as members.
History: The present Penang Golf Club dates to 1984 and is identified by the club as a Robert Trent Jones Jr. design. The venue was known as Bukit Jambul Country Club before adopting the Penang Golf Club name. In 1992 it hosted the 31st Malaysian Open, won by Vijay Singh, giving the course a documented place in the island's modern tournament history. The current club continues to welcome international players and stages professional and club competitions from the Bayan Lepas site.
Did You Know? The course's eighth hole looks toward Penang's second bridge, a 1985 landmark, while the official hole guide records several routing changes in the second nine. The twelfth was lengthened from a par four to a par five, the thirteenth is planted around a lily pond, and the seventeenth plays blind beside a large pond. The final hole aims toward the Equatorial Hotel, giving the closing tee shot a recognizable urban landmark.
