Overview: Pelham Country Club is a private Devereux Emmet course in Pelham Manor, New York, set on rolling low-lying hills about fifteen miles from Manhattan. The compact par-71 routing moves through woodland and open parkland, with changing vistas, modest elevation, and small targets making control more important than modern length.
History: Pelham began in 1908 as a tennis club with a five-hole course cut from a cow pasture. In 1921 Mont Rogers helped acquire the land and hired Devereux Emmet to create the present championship course. The club’s first professional was Long Jim Barnes, who won the U.S. Open shortly after the new course opened.
Did You Know? Jim Barnes’s first professional week at Pelham was followed by a major victory: one week after the course opening, he won the 1921 U.S. Open. Pelham therefore entered golf history with both a new Emmet course and a champion at its first tee.
