Overview: Peel Golf Club occupies ground known as the Congary, close to the town of Peel on the west coast of the Isle of Man. The course plays to a par of 69 over about 5,870 yards, with heathland gorse, pine plantations and streams. Traditional Manx sod hedges cross several holes, a feature rarely seen on courses elsewhere. The elevated ground above the town brings the sea and hills into view, while the exposed position can make wind a factor from the tee through to the putting surface.
History: In 1895 Sandy Herd, Open champion of 1902, laid out Peel’s first twelve holes on the hill above the town. The course expanded to eighteen shortly before the First World War, then had to recover from the damage and disruption of the Second World War. Frank Dalgleish and others helped rebuild its modern form on the same elevated Manx ground.
Did You Know? The first layout is credited to Sandy Herd, the 1902 Open champion, while later work is associated with James Braid. Two leading professionals from golf’s formative design era are therefore linked to the same Manx ground.
