Overview: Patagonia Virgin’s ranked 18-hole concept is a Nicklaus Design course on the western shore of Lake Llanquihue near Frutillar. The planned full routing extends to 7,275 yards and blends open links-style holes with native forest, elevated ground and views to Osorno, Puntiagudo, Tronador and Calbuco. The site sits roughly 450 feet above the lake, so the setting is defined by water, volcanoes and the ancient forest on the west side of the property. Current club and Chilean Golf Federation pages describe the course in operation as nine holes, while the Top100-ranked record identifies the planned 18-hole routing. That distinction matters when interpreting the yardage and the profile.
History: Jaime Said and Nicklaus Design began the Patagonia Virgin project as part of a larger Frutillar resort and residential development. The Nicklaus agreement was announced in 2006, with the design intended to use both the open lake-facing land and the native forest. The first nine holes were inaugurated in December 2015, including an exhibition featuring Angel Cabrera and leading Chilean players. Nicklaus Design’s course record describes the remaining nine as a future phase, so the 2015 date records the first completed golf stage rather than the opening of a finished 18-hole course.
Did You Know? Patagonia Virgin was the first Nicklaus Design course in Chile and the first course in Chilean Patagonia carrying the Nicklaus name. The native woodland includes ancient trees, while gardens around the course were designed by Juan Grimm and Angélica Niklitschek. From the property, golfers can see Lake Llanquihue and several Andean volcanoes, giving the open holes a dramatic backdrop that is unusual even among scenic resort courses.
