Overview: Papwa Sewgolum Golf Club features an 18-hole municipal course in Reservoir Hills, Durban, with a flat woodland character and a scorecard that reaches about 5,526 yards at the listed white tees. The par-72 layout is shaped less by dramatic elevation than by tree lines, narrow corridors and the need to place the ball accurately before approaching the greens. Its setting makes it a practical city course while retaining the quiet, enclosed feel of a wooded park.
History: The course carries the name of Sewsunker “Papwa” Sewgolum, one of South Africa’s most important golfers and a pioneer whose career unfolded under apartheid’s restrictions. The Athlone course was developed into a full 18-hole layout in the summer of 1967/68, and the municipal facility later became a permanent reminder of Papwa’s sporting achievements and the barriers he overcame. Its recent management changes have focused on restoring maintenance and community confidence.
Did You Know? Papwa Sewgolum won the Natal Open in 1963 at Durban Country Club without being allowed to enter the clubhouse through the main door. Naming a major Durban municipal course after him connects the everyday golfing landscape to one of the most powerful stories in South African sport.
