Overview: Palmer Sea Reef is a tropical 18-hole par 71 course just outside Port Douglas, positioned between the coast and the rainforest country of Far North Queensland. Thomson Wolveridge & Perrett designed a layout that uses wide tropical corridors, native vegetation, water and carefully placed bunkers to produce a genuine destination round. The current material lists about 6,125 metres from the main tees, or roughly 6,694 yards, with enough room for length but plenty of reason to think about the next shot.
History: The course opened in May 2000 and became part of the Port Douglas golf and resort network. Its design was intended to complement the region's natural setting rather than imitate a traditional southern links. The result is a course whose identity comes from the contrast between lush vegetation, exposed fairway lines and the strategic interruptions created by bunkers and water.
Did You Know? Palmer Sea Reef is credited with 89 bunkers, a number that helps explain why the course can look generous from the tee yet become demanding around the greens. The best round is usually built on choosing sensible targets and keeping the approach angle open. It is a strong fit for golfers who want their Port Douglas holiday to include a full resort-quality course.
