Overview: Pacific Grove Golf Links is a public coastal course on the Monterey Peninsula, with an inland parkland-style front nine and an exposed back nine beside the ocean. The short scorecard hides the importance of wind, firm turf and angle. The course is approachable for many players but still offers a clear test when the coastal conditions change.
History: The project was proposed in 1929, and H. Chandler Egan's front nine opened on May 9, 1932. Jack Neville later designed the back nine, which opened in 1960. Pacific Grove's official history preserves that two-stage development, explaining why the course has such a marked change in landscape and feel between its nines.
Did You Know? The early project was associated with a symbolic one-dollar, or ten-dollar-gold-coin, commitment to secure the golf land, depending on the historical account. The more useful playing fact is that the back nine reaches the Pacific shoreline and creates the course's signature coastal finish.
