Overview: Oxbow Golf & Country Club is a private Robert Trent Jones Jr. design near the Red River south of Fargo. The course uses the river's broad landscape, prairie views, bluegrass and fescue to create a parkland layout in which wind is an important invisible hazard. The championship markers reach about 7,400 yards at par 72, while multiple tee sets and junior positions make the course more flexible than its length suggests. The modern routing combines open fairways with raised ground, lakes and carefully placed recovery areas, giving the flat Red River Valley a surprising amount of visual movement.
History: Oxbow Country Club was founded in 1975 as the focus of a residential and recreational community. Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed the original course, which quickly became a prominent layout in the region. Repeated Red River flooding eventually led to a major reconstruction connected to area flood-control work. Beginning in 2015, the club rebuilt the clubhouse and other facilities while RTJ II reworked the golf course. The renovation, including 18 new or substantially rebuilt holes, was completed after the flood-control work and returned to play with a higher, more resilient routing.
Did You Know? The course name comes from the U-shaped bends of the Red River that originally framed the property. During the flood-control reconstruction, the design team created a new oxbow of connected lakes and used excavated material to form additional contours, allowing the course to preserve its name while adapting to a changed landscape.
