Overview: Owl’s Nest Resort & Golf Club is a mountain course in Thornton set beside the White Mountain National Forest. Mark Mungeam’s 18-hole layout is arranged in three distinct sections, moving through the Pemigewasset River Valley before finishing with six holes on Sunset Hill. That structure gives the course a useful change of scale: lower holes are framed by valley and forest, while the closing stretch opens into higher ground and broader views. The design combines links-like running sections with mountain elevation changes, so the course never presents the same landscape for long.
History: Owl’s Nest opened for play in 1998 as a new course shaped around the natural topography of the valley. Contemporary design coverage identified the project with Mungeam and described the course as sculpted around the landscape and the nearby White Mountain National Forest. The layout was built as part of a resort setting, but its strongest historical quality is the decision to let the existing land divide the round into distinct sections. The result is a course that reads as a sequence of connected environments rather than a repeated resort template.
Did You Know? The final six holes sit on top of Sunset Hill, creating a dramatic change from the earlier valley holes and explaining much of Owl’s Nest’s reputation for views. The original 1998 course is also distinct from later Vineyard Course development at the wider resort, so the profile here refers to the established 18-hole Owl’s Nest routing rather than a separate new layout.
