Overview: Västerled is Österåkers historic West Course, a parkland layout north-east of Stockholm whose identity is currently tied to a major reconstruction. The original routing moved through mature trees and open rolling ground, with a traditional Swedish balance between strategic fairways and shaped green approaches. It is important to describe the course in its present context: the club is rebuilding Västerled rather than presenting the old layout as unchanged, so historical course facts and future plans belong together in the profile.
History: The original Västerled course opened in 1988 and is associated with Sven Tumba and Jan Sederholm. A complete rebuild began in autumn 2023 under Henrik Stenson Golf Design, with the club planning a reopening in autumn 2026. The course has also hosted the Compaq Open, giving the historic routing a place in Swedish professional golf before the reconstruction began.
Did You Know? Västerled is one half of a 36-hole golf facility whose two course identities are now being reshaped for a new generation. The planned return is therefore a continuation of the club’s history, not a simple reopening of an untouched old layout.
