Overview: Set in the Vaal River and goldfields country, Orkney has an 18-hole, par-72 parkland layout in the Vaal River and goldfields country of North West. The course runs through the Orkney landscape with the river reported alongside holes 8 to 11, while the scorecard records a full-length layout and multiple tee choices. Current mapped data lists the blue course at about 6,485 yards, while another course profile publishes 6,458 metres, so tee and unit differences should be expected. Visitors are welcomed at the town club, which has a clubhouse and the facilities needed for a travelling round.
History: Golf at Orkney dates to 1939, with the course profile identifying Robert Grimsdell with the 1944 design and Golf Data with later work in 1992. Those dates are kept separate here: the club’s opening history is not treated as the same event as the later course development. This makes Orkney a useful example of a South African mining-town course that has evolved through more than one design phase while retaining its original regional identity.
Did You Know? The Vaal River does not simply form a distant backdrop: course descriptions place it parallel to several holes in the middle of the round. That river-side stretch is the distinctive geographic detail of Orkney’s layout, linking the course to the waterway that also shaped the surrounding mining and town landscape.
