Overview: Founded in 1890 by British Port wine traders, Oporto Golf Club is the oldest golf club in the Iberian Peninsula and a cradle of the game in Southern Europe. The authentic links course, which saw its transition to 18 holes in 1934, is situated on the Atlantic coastline near Espinho. Characterized by its sandy soil, low-lying coastal vegetation, and the ever-present "Nortada" wind, the layout is a classic and technical test of links-land golf that has been refined over the decades by architects including Mackenzie Ross and Frank Pennink.
Did You Know? The club is home to the Skeffington Cup, which has been contested annually since 1891 and is recognized as one of the oldest continuous trophies in world golf. Oporto remains a bastion of tradition, maintained as a walking course where caddies are still highly recommended to help players navigate the tight fairways and the traditional "pot" bunkering that defends some of Portugal's most historic greens.
