Overview: Ootacamund Gymkhana Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-70 course on the Wenlock Downs above Ooty in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiri Hills. The club's current course page lists 6,208 yards, while the surrounding highland setting rises to roughly 7,000 feet. Fairways move across open grassland and between wooded sections, with the terrain and thin mountain air affecting both club selection and the physical rhythm of the round. This is a natural hill course whose appeal comes from its ground, sky and changing views rather than from a manufactured resort landscape.
History: The course's story begins before the 1896 Gymkhana name. Historical accounts credit Colonel Ross Thompson with beginning the project in 1889, followed by a nine-hole layout on the Downs in 1891. The club adopted the Gymkhana Golf Club name in 1896, and the course later grew into its present 18-hole form. It has also hosted the South India Open Amateur Championship since 1905, giving the Ooty course a long competitive history alongside its role in the Nilgiris golfing community.
Did You Know? Nine of Ooty's eighteen holes are reported to play blind from the tee, so the opening shot often requires knowledge of the line and the shape of the ground rather than a clear view of the target. The official course details also identify 42 bunkers, three water bodies and seven grass bunkers. Those features, combined with the elevation and rolling Wenlock Downs, give the short-to-medium yardage a character that is more strategic and physical than the number alone suggests.
