Overview: Onion Creek North is a named 18-hole routing within Onion Creek Club’s 27-hole private property in South Austin. It combines part of Jimmy Demaret’s original work with the additional nine shaped by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore. Current course records describe the North combination as par 70 and 6,527 yards, but the club’s rotation can vary, which is why this profile stays specific to the North identity rather than presenting one fixed scorecard for every round at Onion Creek. The land remains central to the experience, with Onion Creek, mature oaks, changing ground and selective water influencing the line of play.
History: The original Onion Creek course was established in 1974, and the club later expanded to 27 holes when Crenshaw and Coore added nine in 1996. The North routing is the clearest expression of that blend: several Demaret holes are joined to the newer nine, producing a course with two related but distinguishable architectural voices. Demaret’s work is generally associated with tighter tree-lined fairways and smaller, guarded greens, while the Crenshaw-Coore nine is more open and uses broader landing areas. The contrast is intentional and gives the round much of its interest.
Did You Know? The North front nine includes four holes that began as part of the Original course, while the full routing then brings in the later nine before returning to more of Demaret’s work. That unusual stitching is why Onion Creek can feel like a historical tour as well as an 18-hole round.
