Overview: The Crump routing at Onion Creek Club is one of the named 18-hole combinations within Austin’s unusual 27-hole private golf property. The club began with Jimmy Demaret’s original design, shaped around the natural movement of the South Austin land, mature trees and Onion Creek itself. Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore later added and blended nine holes, creating a property where the exact daily routing matters. The Crump name should therefore be read as a specific Onion Creek combination, not as a separate club or as a claim that George Crump designed the course. Its golf is rooted in Texas shot-making, with tree-lined corridors, small guarded greens and water that can turn a sensible strategy into a demanding one.
History: Onion Creek was established in 1974 by Austin developer Jimmie Connolly and three-time Masters champion Jimmy Demaret. The club quickly became associated with the Legends of Golf, the event that helped lead to the modern Champions Tour. In 1996, Crenshaw and Coore shaped an additional nine and blended it with Demaret’s work, completing the 27-hole arrangement still described by the club. The different routing names reflect that layered history, with original Demaret holes and later Crenshaw-Coore work sharing the same property.
Did You Know? Onion Creek is widely known as the birthplace of the Senior Tour because the first Legends of Golf event was played there in 1978. The club’s routing also creates a rare architectural conversation, placing Demaret’s tighter, more guarded style beside the broader shapes associated with the later nine.
