Overview: Ombria Resort Golf is an 18-hole mountain course in the inland Algarve near Loulé, designed by Jorge Santana da Silva. The profile is par 71 and 6,345 yards. The course follows the contours of the hills and the Algibre River rather than flattening the site into a conventional resort grid. The opening holes sit among holm oaks and old citrus trees, while the back nine uses higher ground and the river valley to create changing views and elevation. Waterways, ridgelines and mature vegetation shape the strategy, so the round develops through several different landscape types instead of repeating a single Algarve template. Ombria is a modern resort course, but its visual identity comes from its relationship with the inland terrain and the effort to keep the golf inside the existing landscape. The result is a technical and scenic course that plays very differently from Portugal's exposed coastal links.
History: Ombria opened in spring 2023 as one of the Algarve's newest golf courses. Jorge Santana da Silva designed the 18-hole layout with a sustainability brief that reduced the area of turf and preserved the biodiversity of the surrounding site. The project materials describe the course as carved into the hills around the river, with the design evolving during construction to limit the turfed area and protect natural vegetation and water resources. Ombria achieved GEO Certified status, reflecting work across nature, water, energy and pollution control. The course forms part of a resort development, but the history of its construction is defined by restraint: only the land needed for play was treated as golf, while much of the wider 70-hectare setting remained natural.
Did You Know? The Ombria project materials say that turf covers only about 25 percent of the available site. That unusually low proportion was a deliberate design decision, allowing the golf course to follow existing vegetation, river corridors and the natural shape of the Algarve hills.
