Overview: The South Course at Olympia Fields is the club's former Course No. 1, a Tom Bendelow design shaped by dramatic elevation changes and the winding Butterfield Creek. The directory gives an 18-hole par-72 layout at 7,106 yards. Open ground, native trees and creek-side holes create a course that changes character repeatedly, with the approach into each green often determined by the slope of the land. The South is a classical parkland course with enough movement and water to produce a distinct identity from Olympia Fields' Willie Park North Course.
History: The South began as Course No. 1 and opened in 1916 after the temporary 1915 Olympia Fields layout was replaced. Tom Bendelow received the principal design credit, and the course formed part of the original four-course complex. Steve Smyers led a major renovation in 2007, improving the course while preserving its historic routing and strategic relationship with Butterfield Creek. The club today plays its North and South courses as two separate ranked layouts.
Did You Know? The South Course's hole names include Butterfield, referring to the creek that shapes so much of the routing. The name turns a local waterway into a recurring architectural landmark throughout the round.
