Overview: Old Town Club is a hallowed name in American golf architecture, representing one of the finest surviving examples of Perry Maxwell’s genius. Opened in 1939 in Winston-Salem, the layout is a masterclass in strategic routing through rolling, wooded terrain, featuring the dramatic elevation changes and technical complexity that define the Maxwell style. In 2013, the course underwent a widely acclaimed restoration by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, which restored the original scale of the bunkers and the expansive, naturalistic look of the property while ensuring the greens remained some of the most challenging in the country.
History: The club was founded by members of the Reynolds family, the tobacco magnates, who sought to create a high-level sanctuary in their hometown. Maxwell used the natural contours of the land to create a series of holes that feel both grand and intimate, moving remarkably little earth to achieve a profound strategic depth. Over the decades, it has hosted numerous long-established events and remains a vital touchstone for architectural purists, known for its understated atmosphere and its uncompromising commitment to the traditions of the game.
Did You Know? The course is known for its unique "double green" shared by the 8th and 17th holes, a massive expanse of undulating turf that requires extreme precision. It is also one of the few places in the world where you can experience the "Maxwell Roll",the subtle, undulating green contours that have become synonymous with the architect's signature style.
