Overview: Old Overton Club in Vestavia Hills is a wooded, rolling course built around natural elevation changes and the exposed rock of its Birmingham setting. Tom Fazio and Jerry Pate shaped the layout with broad strategic options, sloping ground and greens that reward a precise approach. The course measures 7,228 yards at par 71, with the terrain supplying much of the challenge: a well-positioned tee shot can open an angle, while a poor line leaves the player negotiating the hills and the contours around the green. The surrounding residential development is kept secondary to the landform and the golf.
History: Old Overton opened in 1993 as an invitation-only private club designed by Fazio and Pate. Golf Digest named it one of the best new private courses in the United States in 1994, and the club soon became a regular venue for the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. In 2020, Pate supervised a major renovation that refreshed the course while retaining the original partnership’s strategic intent. The property’s history is therefore unusually compact: a 1993 opening, early national recognition and a documented renovation led by one of its original designers.
Did You Know? The club hosts the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, an event named for the professional golfer and designer who helped create Old Overton. The tournament gives the course an annual connection to collegiate golf and to its own architectural history.
