Overview: Old Memorial is a private course in Tampa, Florida, built on a large sandy property with an intentionally natural, open feel. Steve Smyers shaped the course to evoke firm, strategic golf associated with Scottish and Australian traditions, using sandy waste areas, native vegetation and broad landing zones.
History: Construction began in 1996 and the course opened in November 1997. The club was founded by the Outback Steakhouse partners, and the clubhouse followed in 1998 as the property developed into a national private club.
Did You Know? Old Memorial occupies roughly 312 acres, giving the course room to create separation between holes. The design brief aimed for a firm and bouncy playing style rather than the lush, water-heavy look often associated with Florida golf.
