Overview: Old Macdonald, the fourth course built at the world-known Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon, is a dramatic links course designed as a historic tribute to C.B. Macdonald, the father of American golf architecture. The course is characterized by its massive, undulating greens, some of the largest in the world, and expansive fairways set within the rugged coastal dunes. It demands bold, creative shot-making, encouraging players to utilize the contours and play a traditional ground game to navigate the wind-swept landscape.
History: Opened in 2010, the course was designed by Tom Doak and Jim Urbina, who meticulously recreated Macdonald's notable "template" holes (including the Redan, Eden, Alps, and Biarritz) on a grand, coastal scale. The project was conceived by resort founder Mike Keiser to honor Macdonald's massive impact on the game, utilizing the native sandy soil to ensure fast and firm playing conditions that perfectly mimic the classic links of the British Isles.
Did You Know? The signature "Ghost Tree",a dead, weathered Port Orford cedar sitting behind the 3rd green, serves as the primary aiming point for players navigating the blind tee shot on the par-4 3rd hole. The course is famously the most polarizing routing at Bandon Dunes due to the extreme scale of its greens and the severe strategic challenges presented by the wind.
