Overview: The Gray Course is the shorter companion to Ohio State University’s Scarlet Course in Columbus. Its par-70, 5,800-yard layout provides a more compact university-golf experience, with tree-lined holes and classic green shaping within the same 36-hole campus complex. The profile here refers specifically to Gray, not to the longer Scarlet championship routing.
History: Alister MacKenzie supplied the original routing for Ohio State’s golf project in the early 1930s, while Perry Maxwell oversaw the development of the Scarlet course. Ohio State records place completion of the Gray Course in 1940. The university later commissioned Jack Nicklaus to restore the Scarlet Course, preserving the complex’s layered design history.
Did You Know? Ohio State’s golf facility has a direct connection to the development of collegiate golf. The Scarlet hosted the first women’s collegiate championship in 1941, while the Gray Course gives the campus a second, lower-yardage routing with its own identity.
