Overview: The Palmer Course at Oglebay’s Speidel Golf Club is an Arnold Palmer design in the rolling parkland above Wheeling, West Virginia. The 6,800-yard, par-71 layout combines generous greens, strategic bunkering and a varied mix of six par threes, seven par fours and five par fives. Its scale is approachable for a resort course, but the changes in slope and the variety of hole shapes make club selection important. The surrounding parkland keeps the course connected to Oglebay’s broader landscape rather than isolating it as a separate development.
History: Oglebay developed the Palmer Course as its second championship layout after the Robert Trent Jones course at Speidel. Planning and construction took several years, and the Arnold Palmer Signature Course opened in May 2000. It was dedicated to the late Wheeling architect Archibald Klieves after a major gift from his daughter, Jane Klieves Sauder, adding a local architectural connection to Palmer’s design.
Did You Know? Oglebay’s golf program includes the two championship Speidel courses alongside the older Crispin course and a separate par-3 layout. The Palmer Course therefore belongs to a larger public park golf system, not a single resort loop, and its six par threes are part of a deliberately varied 18-hole composition.
