Overview: The Jones Course at Oglebay’s Speidel Golf Club is a Robert Trent Jones Sr. design in the rolling hills of Wheeling, West Virginia. Its parkland routing uses undulating ground, strategic bunkering and a mixture of longer holes and carefully shaped approaches to create a serious public-resort test. From the championship markers it measures about 7,001 yards and plays to par 71. The course has enough room for broad views, but the changing contours keep the player focused on the next landing area and the shape of the approach.
History: Oglebay’s master plan called for a championship course on the Speidel and JoBetty Farm property, and Robert Trent Jones was selected during the 1960s. The front nine opened in June 1970, while the second nine followed in late 1971 as construction and landscaping continued. The course later hosted the West Virginia LPGA Classic for 11 years, with a major Jones Course renovation carried out more than four decades after the original work.
Did You Know? The Speidel Jones project was the first public course designed by the Robert Trent Jones firm, according to the Oglebay Foundation’s course history. The course has also hosted the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship, extending its story from regional resort golf into national collegiate competition.
