Overview: Ocala Golf Club is the city-owned 18-hole course at 3130 East Silver Springs Boulevard. The current scorecard record lists par 72 and 6,552 yards from the longest orange tees. Mature live oaks, short-grass collection areas, white-sand bunkers and TifEagle greens give the municipal course a strategic parkland character, with five sets of tees extending the card from about 4,200 to 6,552 yards.
History: The present 18-hole course was built under E. Ellsworth Giles and opened as Ocala Highlands Golf Course and Hotel in 1931. The City of Ocala purchased it in 1944, and three holes were altered when a new clubhouse was built. Michael Beebe led the major 2009 renovation, which rebuilt greens, tees, bunkers, irrigation and cart paths while restoring the course's older strategic character.
Did You Know? Ocala's golf history predates the current course: an earlier nine-hole Ocala Heights Golf Club helped build local interest and contributed to the formation of the Florida State Golf Association in 1913. The municipal course later became known locally as the muni, a nickname that still fits its city-owned identity.
