Overview: Northern Hills Golf Course is a public 18-hole facility in northeast San Antonio and part of the Alamo City Golf Trail. The trail’s history places its grand opening in 1969, while current score records list a par-72 layout reaching 6,602 yards from the blue tees. The course belongs to the classic municipal-golf generation of San Antonio, offering a complete round within a neighbourhood setting rather than a resort presentation. Its place in the city network also gives it practical importance: Northern Hills is one of the courses that makes a broad range of golf available across the metropolitan area.
History: Northern Hills has been updated repeatedly as part of the city’s long-running investment in municipal golf. The trail records a new irrigation system in 2015, pond rehabilitation in 2019, updated driving-range hitting decks and on-course restrooms in 2024, and further tee-box and cart-path work scheduled through 2026. These projects show an active course rather than a static historical listing. The original late-1960s identity remains in place, but the infrastructure continues to be renewed for current play.
Did You Know? Northern Hills is one of the Alamo City Golf Trail courses with a published blue-tee profile above 6,600 yards, yet the same record also lists a much shorter gold layout. That spread is a reminder that the course was built to serve a wide local playing community, not one narrow standard of golfer.
