Overview: North Shore Country Club in Glen Head is a historic Long Island course built by Seth Raynor and Charles Blair Macdonald. The club’s own history describes a 6,365-yard course with small, quick, tightly bunkered greens and a routing that makes the most of the coastal Gold Coast landscape. Tom Doak’s recent rehabilitation adds a modern preservation layer without changing the course’s historic identity.
History: The club purchased the Glenwood property in 1914, then hired Seth Raynor in November of that year to improve the course. Raynor and Macdonald’s new layout was ready for play by Memorial Day 1916. The club later commissioned Tom Doak to rehabilitate the course, continuing a long tradition of preserving its original architectural character.
Did You Know? North Shore’s course was built while Raynor and Macdonald were still developing the design language later associated with many famous American courses. Its small, sloped and tightly bunkered greens preserve that early Golden Age vocabulary.
