Overview: North Oaks Golf Club is a private Stanley Thompson course north of St. Paul, built across the former North Oaks estate and its rolling lake-country terrain. Thompson's design makes the landscape central to the round: wooded corridors, open slopes, natural water and changing elevation create a course that is strategic without feeling manufactured. The scorecard is only part of the story; the interest comes from how the routing moves through the land and asks the player to read the next shot from a changing set of angles.
History: James J. Hill established North Oaks as an experimental farm in the late nineteenth century, and the property later became the foundation for a planned community. Louis W. Hill Jr. envisioned an 18-hole course as part of that development, and Stanley Thompson was hired in 1950. North Oaks opened for play in 1951 and became a private golf club in 1953. The course is especially significant in Thompson's career because it was his last design outside Canada, giving Minnesota a rare example of his work at the end of his American practice.
Did You Know? North Oaks is described by the Stanley Thompson Society as the final Stanley Thompson course built outside Canada. Its place in the architect's portfolio is therefore unusually clear, even though the course is less publicly known than many of Thompson's Canadian designs.
