Overview: Nikko Country Club is a forested parkland course at the foot of the Nikko mountains, where the Daiya River and the surrounding peaks give the 18-hole routing its distinctive setting. Seiichi Inoue used the natural ground to create broad, rolling fairways framed by mature trees, with the river edge and mountain weather changing the character of the holes from one stretch to the next. The course has a quiet visual language, but the wooded corridors demand accurate positioning.
History: The Nikko project gathered momentum in 1952, after local leaders and business figures began planning a course in the river valley. Construction followed surveys of the site in 1953 and 1954. The course opened in stages in 1955, with the first nine holes available on 3 April and the inward nine opening on 22 May to complete the 18-hole routing. Inoue’s design was shaped by the flat river land and the mountain backdrop rather than by heavy earthmoving.
