Overview: Niitvälja Golf Course is Estonia’s historic home of golf and an 18-hole Park Course about 30 kilometres from Tallinn. The original plan came from Swedish architect Åke Persson, while Peter Chamberlain designed the 2006 expansion that shaped the modern course record. Forest, water and carefully maintained natural ground dominate the setting, with the official club describing a layout where the 15th hole’s par-5 approach finishes on a floating green. The directory lists par 72 and approximately 7,011 yards. Niitvälja is a course of contrasts: broad wooded spaces can appear calm, but water and the island finish punish imprecise planning.
History: Niitvälja’s first nine holes entered play in 1993, followed by the full 18-hole course on 3 July 1994. That makes 1994 the appropriate opening year for this complete course row. The project began from a former dumping ground and grew into the first 18-hole golf course in the Baltic region, giving Niitvälja a pioneering role in Estonian and Baltic golf. Five holes were later developed or replaced as part of the 2006 Park Course expansion under Peter Chamberlain, while the original Persson concept remains visible in the course’s forest and water-based character. The club’s Niitvälja Cup has also been held since 1993 and remains one of the region’s established amateur events.
Did You Know? The 15th hole is known locally as the Island of Tears because its par-5 approach ends on a floating green. It is not simply a scenic island feature: the green is the closing target of a long hole, so the player must manage distance, angle and water together. The nickname captures the way Niitvälja turns a calm forest setting into a very direct test of nerve.
