Overview: Newport Country Club, perched on the rocky coast of Rhode Island, is an extraordinary, wind-swept links-style course that serves as one of the ultimate monuments of American golf history. Set across relatively flat but architecturally sophisticated terrain, the course is completely exposed to the Atlantic breezes, demanding creative ground-game strategy. It features deep pot bunkers, plateau greens, and a complete absence of trees, providing a raw seaside experience that perfectly mimics the classic links of Great Britain.
History: Founded in 1893, Newport is a historic founding member of the USGA and is designated as a National Historic Landmark. The original course was designed by William F. Davis, and subsequently refined by legendary golden-age masters Donald Ross and A.W. Tillinghast. It hosted the very first U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur in 1895, and famously welcomed Tiger Woods in 1995 when he captured his second U.S. Amateur title here.
Did You Know? The club's iconic Beaux-Arts clubhouse, designed by Whitney Warren and overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, is one of the grandest structures in golf. Because of its coastal setting, the course is highly vulnerable to sea fog, which can roll in off the ocean in minutes and completely obscure the fairways, adding a mystical layer of challenge.
