Overview: Newcastle Golf Club is a historic routing situated in Fern Bay, New South Wales, built on a sandbase with rolling dunes. Originally routed by Fred Popplewell in 1915 and expanded to 18 holes by Eric Apperly in 1937, the course is often compared to the famous Melbourne Sandbelt layouts. The tree-lined fairways meander through dense native flora, demanding precise positioning off the tee.
History: The club was founded in 1915 and initially operated a nine-hole course. In 1937, Eric Apperly expanded the course to a full 18-hole championship layout, which has hosted several professional tournaments including the NSW Open. Architect Bob Harrison oversaw a significant modernization project in 2016, and further updates are ongoing.
Did You Know? Despite being located in a coastal region, the course features a parkland-heathland character with no water hazards, instead relying on the wind, elevation changes, and sandy scrub to defend its par.
