Overview: Nelspruit Golf Club, now presented as Mbombela Golf Club, presents an 18-hole par-71 parkland course in Mpumalanga’s Lowveld. The current white-tee length is about 6,633 metres, but the impression of the course comes less from a single number than from its tree-lined corridors, elevation changes and warm, subtropical landscape. Accurate driving is important, and the course uses doglegs, raised or narrow greens and natural vegetation to make the scorecard work harder than the relaxed setting suggests.
History: The club was established in 1928 and moved to its present site in 1939. For almost three decades it played as a nine-hole course before the second nine was added in 1967–68. Historical sources credit Robert Grimsdell with the course design tradition, while the modern club has updated its presentation under the Mbombela name as Nelspruit has grown into a regional centre for the Lowveld.
Did You Know? The course’s trees are often described as “bunkers in the air.” That phrase captures the main strategic idea at Nelspruit: a drive can find the fairway on the ground yet still leave no useful route to the green if it is played from the wrong side of the tree line.
