Overview: Muthaiga Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-71 parkland course in Nairobi, where tree-lined corridors and water features give the modern layout a distinctive East African character. The championship tees extend to 7,169 yards. Fairways wind through lush woodland associated with the Karura Forest area, with lakes and ponds appearing between the trees. The club’s own history highlights the fast greens and the large number of water features added during the modern reconstruction. The result is a course that asks for precise lines into the greens while still offering a memorable walk through mature Nairobi landscape.
History: Golf was being played at Muthaiga by the 1920s, and Kenya Tourism Board records list the original course as opening in 1913. The club was incorporated in 1943. Muthaiga hosted the first major tournament that became the Kenya Open in 1967, establishing a long connection with the country’s leading professional event. In 2001 the club engaged South African architect Peter Matkovich of Matkovich & Hayes for a major reconstruction. The modern course officially opened on 6 November 2004, after which new lakes and other water features became part of its identity.
Did You Know? Muthaiga’s water features are not just visual hazards. Kenya Tourism Board notes that the lakes and ponds provide breeding habitat for Egyptian geese, while monkeys are often seen around the 4th and 5th holes. The par-4 4th is described in the same guide as a 522-yard dogleg, followed by a par-3 5th. That combination of wildlife and demanding holes helps explain why the club is often called the Home of Golf in Kenya.
