Overview: Muskoka Lakes Golf & Country Club is an 18-hole Stanley Thompson course in Port Carling, set among the forests and rocky ground associated with the Muskoka Lakes district. The official course page lists par 70 and 6,031 yards from the black tees. That length does not tell the whole story: Thompson’s work relies on the natural setting, changes of level and the need to choose sensible lines into greens rather than simply overpowering the course. It remains a member-focused club, with a driving range and chipping and putting practice areas supporting the main course.
History: The club’s founders assembled the property from Liliwood Farms and an adjoining farm, a combined 135 acres purchased by 1919. Stanley Thompson was retained after the first board was appointed, construction began in 1920, and the course opened for play on August 26, 1922. The club later added tennis, sailing and other summer activities, while course facilities and the clubhouse were upgraded over time. A 76-acre parcel acquired in 1976 enabled a larger practice area and expanded club facilities without changing the course’s early Muskoka identity.
Did You Know? The club’s opening day was August 26, 1922, a precise date preserved in the club history. The course was built from land assembled from Liliwood Farms and a neighbouring farm, giving the early Thompson design a distinctly Muskoka foundation before later practice and clubhouse improvements.
