Overview: Murphy Creek Golf Course is a public 18-hole Ken Kavanaugh design in Aurora, Colorado. The prairie-links layout plays to par 72 and 6,909 yards from the blue tees, with wider corridors, large greens, native grasses and the open eastern horizon creating a very different look from the foothill courses west of Denver. The design invites players to use the breadth of the fairways, but that apparent generosity is balanced by bunkers, water features and approach shots that become difficult when the ball is left on the wrong side. The old-homestead character is part of the course’s identity: the land feels open and weather-exposed, and the strategic questions are usually about choosing a line and managing the next approach rather than simply avoiding trees. Multiple tee positions allow the same routing to change considerably in scale.
History: Aurora established Murphy Creek in 2000 as an 18-hole municipal championship course and commissioned Ken Kavanaugh to shape the routing. The course became part of the city’s broader public golf system, giving the growing eastern side of the Denver metro area a full-length layout with a strong architectural identity. Its prairie-links concept was a deliberate departure from a conventional parkland course, using native areas, broad landing zones and large putting surfaces to create variety across the round. Murphy Creek later gained national attention as the site of the 2008 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, adding a significant competitive chapter to the course’s municipal history.
Did You Know? The course was built around the visual language of an old Colorado homestead. That idea explains the combination of open prairie, broad horizons and large greens, rather than a routing dominated by mature woodland or mountain walls.
